Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria employed by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The location, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - enforced jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary John Healey remarked.

British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of thousands of UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who pose a risk to our security, demonstrates how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the American forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, after an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
